Pajhwok Afghan News and BBC journalist killed in complex suicide attack
On July 28th 2011 a group of suicide attackers entered the governmental compound in Tarin Kot, the capital of Urozgan province. Radio Television of Afghanistan, RTA is located inside this compound, along with other offices of the provincial government.
Pajhwok Afghan News and BBC journalist Omid Ikhpelwak was Inside the RTA building, using (as always) the facility for digital editing. When the suicide attackers entered the building, Ikhpelwak sent a SMS to his brother indicating he was in danger and later on another SMS saying “I am gone, pray for me”.
Hours after the SMS his brother was asked to come receive his brother’s body. Ikhpelwak’s body had been hit by 11 bullets and shrapnel, including in his arms and legs and chest. Although it was initially thought that he was killed by the attackers entering the building, it is still not clear whether he was killed by the suicide attackers gunfire and explosion or as a result of the ensuing hours-long gunfight between Afghan and International security forces and the attackers.
The BBC has asked NATO to investigate the incident and NATO has agreed to an investigation. The Ikhpelwak family still await the official announcement of the result the investigation. The news of Ikhpelwak’s killing again raised the alarm, and is a reminder that journalists are in danger in Afghanistan. All media advocates and rights organizations demanded from Afghanistan government to make journalist work place and life safe and secure.
